Are you a busy mother running a nail/beauty business, who wants to achieve a healthy work-life balance and earn an amazing income?
Home salon owner, Kate Joyner, established Facebook group, The Balanced Beauty Bosses, for you. “I wanted to create a safe space for women to connect with like-minded business owners and feel less alone,” she tells Scratch.
The pro and mum of two runs The Beauty Hut in Long Hanborough, West Oxfordshire, and has been self-employed in the beauty sector over the last 12 years, around having her sons. She noticed an opportunity for a community group aimed at mothers in the beauty industry, and created the The Balanced Beauty Bosses in March 2024. It now has over 500 members.
“I know it can be challenging to balance work and home lives when you are a mum running your own business,” Kate says. “Owning a home salon makes it especially hard to separate these, and for mums, the added pressure of wanting to spend time with children, while also providing for them, can be a struggle.
“Via the group, I strive to show that it’s possible to earn well without working long hours, and share my knowledge from running businesses around my children for over a decade.”
Over summer, Kate hosted weekly, free training sessions via The Balanced Beauty Bosses. Members can also post their questions into the group, to receive support.
Kate shares the significance of achieving a healthy work-life balance in the beauty industry: “A poor balance can lead to burnout and stress; our jobs can be intense, as we build close relationships with clients and they often offload their problems onto us. Working long hours can also have negative impacts on relationships with family and friends.”
Basing her business from a garden cabin has helped the beauty pro to separate her personal and professional lives. “It’s important to communicate your boundaries with clients and stick to them, as well as have clear policies in place,” Kate comments. “For example, set and follow your working hours – don’t be guilt tripped into fitting in extra clients, and avoid checking or replying to work-related messages outside of these hours. Having an online booking system helps with this.”
