Many UK hair and beauty pros are not earning enough to cover personal and business costs.

These are the results of the first annual pricing survey by Boss Your Salon, which offers pricing, marketing and mindset support to industry professionals.

With insight gathered from over 1,200 respondents using Boss Your Salon’s pricing calculators, it was found that the average hourly rate earned by UK hair and beauty pros is £13.25.

After accounting for non-client-facing work, pros’ hourly income falls to £10.19: significantly below the National Living Wage.

The research discovered that UK hair and beauty pros’ average monthly income is £1,533.42 (pre-tax and National Insurance), but they need to earn £3,042 per month to cover the cost of living and overhead expenses.

Maddi CookMaddi Cook, founder of Boss Your Salon, comments: “Our survey shows that many hair and beauty professionals are struggling to make ends meet, with actual earnings falling far short of what is required to cover their overhead costs and maintain a reasonable standard of living.

“There is no one-size-fits-all: pricing structures need to suit the individual’s business and lifestyle, taking mortgage, childcare etc. into account, but this is a call to action for the industry.

“We need to reassess pricing models and ensure that professionals are fairly compensated for their skills and hard work.”
