Opi X Wicked

Nail enthusiasts can choose from 21 spellbinding nail colours in the OPI x Wicked collection, released for the holiday season.

Inspired by the Universal Pictures’ musical movie, Wicked – in cinemas 22 November, the collection features 12 colour-matched shades in OPI Nail Lacquer and the reformulated GelColor formula, featuring Intelli-Gel Technology™, and nine Infinite Shine Long-wear Lacquer hues.

The nail shades and their names nod to the rich, vibrant and magical world of Wicked and the witches of Oz, from enchanting greens inspired by Elphaba (played by OPI global ambassador, Cynthia Erivo) to bubbly pinks paying homage to Glinda (played by Ariana Grande). Nail effects including a glow-in-the-dark hue, shimmers, pearls and crèmes.

Oscar-winning make-up, hair & prosthetics designer, Frances Hannon, used OPI to create nails for the Wicked film and comments: “I’ve been a long-time fan of OPI for its exceptional quality and variety of beautiful colours. The rich sets and costumes, lead character arcs and shades of green found in nature inspired fantastical nail looks.

“I wanted the nails to help tell the Wicked characters’ stories, including Elphaba’s natural green nails as an extension of her skin colour at the beginning of the film,” she continues. “Elphaba’s manicure progresses to a longer, stronger look with powerful nail art, as she develops her sense of self and discovers her true potential. Glinda’s French manicure is stylish, elegant and timeless, with small emerald embellishments to reflect her privilege and popularity.”

OPI x Wicked has been a true collaboration that started organically,” adds OPI co-founder & brand ambassador, Suzi Weiss-Fischmann. “We began working with the makeup artist, set designer & costume designer, and the excitement built from there. Once the shades were created, we worked with Universal to co-create names based on the movie’s themes and characters.”

“I went to the set and saw OPI all over,” shares Jill Bartoshevich, OPI global director of colour equity. “I got to see how the nails were such a big part of the characters, and I knew OPI and Wicked could make magic together.

“We took five themes from the movie: empowerment, equality, integrity, defiance and sisterhood, and interpreted these through the collection’s colours.

“OPI’m Phosphorescent! is a glow-in-the-dark shade, which is very prominent in the movie. The other hero shade is Ga-Linda, Glinda’s signature pale pink.”
