Ahoy! Join Wendy Old, educator with HD Professional, as she embarks on a nail-focused cruise and shares tech tales from the High Seas…
Day 4
Today saw an early start with us docking at 7.30am in our first port – Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic.
Having never been anywhere like this before, I was seriously impressed! Waking up to a breath-taking view from the ship was awe-inspiring: golden beaches, palm trees and the crisp blue sea. What more could you ask for?
After disembarking the cruise liner, we ventured around the local shopping mall to source souvenirs but then we found a fabulous pool and beach complex surrounded by tropical trees and flowers. With free entry, it was not up for discussion! The group sipped cocktails and spent the rest of the day sunbathing, swimming and soaking up the sunrays. We didn’t give the grey Tupperware skies of the UK a second thought – to quote Bill Bryson!
Later, back on board, we quickly freshened up and headed to dinner. The food choices on this liner are endless; there’s everything you could wish for! We finished the evening off in ‘cruise liner’ style, by socialising in the casino with fellow nail techs and their families. A fun game of boys vs girls Trivial Pursuit ensued and I’m pleased to announce the girls won.
Tomorrow sees us heading to the island of St.Thomas, which, according word on the ship, has one of the best beaches in the world.
Day 5
We disembarked in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands for a new adventure. A chat with Carrie Timmons, one of our new nail tech friends, revealed that the adjacent island proffered a stunning beach where turtles and stingrays can be glimpsed.
Once we were off the ship, we headed off in a taxi to the local ferry port to catch a boat to the next Island, St John. The ride itself was awesome; the taxis here are more like safari trucks, so we got to see some beautiful scenery.
On arrival we took another taxi to Maho Beach, where the views are simply stunning. Some of the group headed off to snorkel. I wasn’t brave enough, so I hung with the rest of the group on the beach. This was one of my highlights of the trip so far.
Sitting and chatting with fellow nail techs from so many different places and sharing our personal experiences and skills has been enlightening. Hazel and I already knew the Profile Backstage duo, Ami McClure and Tracy Dungan, pretty well, as well as Gina Silvestro through our work with Akzentz. But, we have since taking this trip found new and life-long friends, such as our fabulous organiser, Braden Jahr, the insanely talented – and funny – Nelly Neal, as well as the beautiful Debra Schmidt, Angela Blaisdell and Michelle, to name but a few.
The networking at an event like this is priceless.
