Nail & beauty businesses are to remain closed as a date for reopening has not been confirmed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson as the easing of Covid-19 lockdown continues.
In an announcement today (23 June), the Prime Minister confirmed hairdressers will be allowed to open from 4 July, as long as protective measures are in place and visors are worn.
Referencing nail businesses directly in his announcement the Prime Minister stated: “We also intend to allow some other close contact services, such as nail bars, to re-open as soon as we can, when we are confident they can operate in a Covid-secure way.”
The Prime Minister also confirmed spas must remain shut, but Covid guidelines were to be released for every sector that is opening, too.
In the address, the prime minister also stated that the from 4 July the two-metre rule is to be relaxed to “one metre plus” where two-metres is not possible.
The Prime Minister said: “We can now go further and safely ease the lockdown in England … At every stage, caution will remain our watch word. Each step will be conditional and reversible.”
Businesses and areas allowed to open (with safety measurements in place) on 4 July include:
- Pubs and restaurants (indoors and outdoors with safety measures)
- Hotels, bed and breakfasts
- Campsites and caravan parks
- Playgrounds, museums, galleries, theme parks, outdoor gyms and arcades
- Libraries, social clubs and community centres
- Places of worship
The announcement confirmed that from 4 July people will also be allowed to meet with one other household at a time indoors, subject to social distancing. These meet-ups do not always have to be with the same household, but that only one household can meet one other at any time.
“Today, we can say that our long national hibernation is beginning to come to an end and life is returning to our shops, streets and homes and a new, but cautious, optimism is palpable,” he stated.
“But it would be all too easy for that frost to return and that is why we will continue to trust in the common sense and the community spirit of the British people to follow this guidance, to carry us through and see us to victory over this virus.”
It was announced last week that currently salons in Northern Ireland can reopen from 6 July, while the proposed date for Wales is 13 July.
As included in our previous update, tough powers are still in place to enforce action if businesses don’t comply with the Covid-secure guidelines, including fines and jail sentences of up to two years.
