Marian Newman Book

Renowned session nailist, Marian Newman, has set another precedent by adding a coffee table book to her far-reaching list of career highs and firsts.

Known to beauty editors as the go-to manicurist for shoots, Marian’s nail routine regularly sees her flying the globe for judging, grooming, launching, designing new nail concepts and educating. She started her career over 30 years ago and her achievements have been celebrated in a coffee table book, Nailed It.

With a respectful nod to those that have been instrumental in the success of her fashion and beauty expedition, chapters include Helping Hands, in which the likes of Val Garland (make-up artist), Kate Moss (model) and Kathy Phillips (former international beauty director of Condé Nast Asia Pacific) were invited to create an image of their own hands in their own story.

The massive centre section of the book – Iconic Editorials – leads the reader on a nail grooming odyssey of stunning, wild and fabulous nail imagery that has been published all over the world in magazines such as Vogue (UK, China and Japan editions) as well as in campaigns for brands including Dior. Each is delivered with Marian’s backstage story and any special quip, moment or insight from the project.

“Nearly two years ago I was shocked, surprised, flattered and then a little nervous when Camilla Morton (the author of How To Walk in High Heels) contacted me,” reveals Marian. “At that time, she was the fashion commissioning editor for Laurence King Publishing, a well-respected London publisher, which has a fabulous title list.

“My long-term collaborators Sam McKnight and Val Garland had recently released an amazing book (with Somerset House exhibition) and just been commissioned, respectively. Now me! My first question to Camilla was, ‘But am I book worthy?’ Her answer was, ‘Of course you are darling! You were there at the beginning and made fashion conscious of ‘nails’!’ Oh! Well go on then!

“So, here it is. My career laid bare. I’m Marian. I do nails.”
