Industry Brands Addressing Planet Pollution

Plastic Pollution with a Solution
By the year 2050 there will be more plastic than fish by weight in the sea. Production of recycled resin uses 85% less energy and emits 75% fewer greenhouse gasses than the production of virgin resin.
The Kevin Murphy haircare range uses Ocean Waste Plastic (OWP) for all its product packaging. OWP is plastic that’s been reclaimed for the purpose of recycling from the oceans, rivers and beaches. “This change is for the future of our environment and for us to be truly sustainable- to clean up our oceans for the sake of our planet and for future generations,” cites Kevin Murphy, brand founder. “We are proud to partner with Pack Tech, a leading innovator in the professional packaging industry and take great pride in aligning with like-minded companies that are equally committed to our mission to lessen our impact on the environment.”
A truly useful initiative, OWP can reduce the total amount of plastic in the world. By cleaning oceans and beaches, this operation is saving the lives of millions of marine animals whose lives are threatened by plastic waste. And, once the product is sued, the OWP packaging is itself 100% recyclable, allowing it to be repurposed again and again. The Kevin Murphy OWP is mainly collected around the Philippine Sea, the Caribbean Sea and the Indian Ocean and for every package that is made from OWP, it’s the equivalent of removing three plastic bags from the ocean.
Where Polish Bottles Can Safely Go To Die
RecycLeBelle is a sustainable initiative for recycling old product bottles with the nail industry’s Louellabelle. Customers can return nail polish bottles, gel polish and cuticle oil bottles from any brand to Louellebelle by requesting a special label from the company.
Nail product packaging is often composed of a variety of materials, which makes recycling them difficult. Most public kerbside recycling programmes will not accept varnish/gel bottles at present.
This scheme, launched on the 1 January 2020, allows customers to return any empty bottles (a small amount of residue is acceptable) to Louella Belle and receive a 15% discount off their next order when they return four polish bottles (offer excludes Sienna X).
The bottles will be collected by a recycling company and sorted into different materials, which can be recycled in the best possible way. Louella Belle is working towards being more mindful towards recycling and rewarding customers for their efforts.

Glitter & Glitz with Eco-Friendly Twist
Lecenté teamed up with Bioglitter® to develop a glitter range for nails that’s high quality and an eco-friendly alternative to plastic-based glitter. These glitters are produced in an ultra-fine cut using natural and plant-derived, non-plastic material, which will biodegrade into harmless substances in the natural environment.
For the winter season Lecenté reveals four new foils and six new biodegradable glitters for festive designs. Red or Pine Shimmer give a touch of Christmas magic with Burnt Orange delivering a more autumnal look. If client wants to keep it simple and classy, use Black Foil at full coverage to achieve a sophisticated design.
Light rose gold Acorn, classic silver Winter or true gold Sunshine are presented for a Christmas themed manicure. To add a touch of colour, magenta pink Lotus, grape-toned Orchard or bright blue River are essential bright accents.
FOILS £3.99 / BIOGLITTERS £4.95
Did you know…
L’Oreal has installed recycling points in branches of Tesco, Boots, Sainsbury’s and Superdrug, where compacts, eyeshadow palettes, foundations, concealer tubes, mascara, eyeliner and lip products can be placed. Currently nail polish, make-up brushes and aerosols are not accepted.
Brands such as The Body Shop, Kiehl’s, Lush (rewards every five pots returned, with a fresh face mask to say ‘thank you’) and MAC also accept back their empty product receptacles for recycling.
Food For Thought…
Convinced that a line of certified organic make-up must use a natural packaging, the elegance and modernity of bamboo assert themselves as obvious for David, Philippe, Yvan and Salima, the co-founders of Zao Make-up.
All trees are carbon storers, however, bamboo’s exceptional growth rate makes it a carbon capture champion during its life-cycle. It allows Zao products to display a reduced carbon footprint.
Bamboo is also incorporated into formulas in the form of sap powder, leaf hydrosol or bamboo rhizome macerate. This plant is rich in organic silica, an element naturally present in the body and participates in the process of producing collagen, which preserves the elasticity of tissues.
Bamboo is the distinction and identity of Zao Make-Up
The idea was born from a Taiwanese friend who one day offered co-founder, David, a box containing a mechanical pencil and bamboo pen. Seeing these two cylindrical objects with such thin walls, he had a brain wave! If it’s possible to make a pen, it’s conceivable to create lipsticks and other bamboo make-up packaging. On his return from Asia, the four friends were conquered by the idea and the adventure of Zao began.
Addressing the issues of recycling and refilling packaging, Zao Make-up has this forward-thinking stance; ‘Recycling techniques today in many countries are not efficient enough to sort make-up products as they are too small to be processed by the current equipment. If we put them in waste sorting bins, they won’t be recognised and so will not be recycled.
That’s why ZAO products are sustainable and refillable. Thanks to its easy and fun refilling system, customers can easily replace their product in an economical and environmentally friendly way by buying only a refill. You keep the bamboo container and use it as you wish. Each bamboo product comes in an elegant pouch to be able to keep it even longer. Apart from reducing costs and packaging, they also allow you to try and change colours depending on your mood’.
