National homelessness charity, Crisis, is calling on hairdressers, barbers and salon assistants across the country to volunteer at their Christmas centres this month.
The centres provide thousands of people with good, warmth, healthcare and specialist services over Christmas in addition to Crisis’ year-round services.
Salon services such as washing, cutting and blow-drying guests’ hair is incredibly popular, with volunteers carrying out 955 haircuts to Crisis Christmas guests last year.
Not all salon roles require professional qualifications, just enthusiasm and a desire to help guests enjoy their Christmas.
“At first, guests can be really shy, but as we start working on their nails, you see them brighten up – it really is the most rewarding week of my year,” – Jessica Veal, volunteer.
Jessica Veal, a marketing consultant and volunteer, says, “I’ve volunteered in the salon team for the last four years now. Having grown up working in my mum’s beauty salon, I know how much of a difference these treatments can make.
“The salon service is all about hands-on contact and making the guests feel comfortable. At first, guests can be really shy but as we start working on their nails, you see them start to brighten up – it really is the most rewarding week of my year.”
Jon Sparkes, chief executive of Crisis, concludes, “This year, our volunteer spaces are filling up quickly, but we’re calling on hairdressers, chefs and entertainers to help us fill the rest.
“We can’t thank everyone enough for their support. While we continue fighting for an end to homelessness once and for all, Crisis and our volunteers will continue to be here for everyone who needs us.”
The centres run from 22 – 29 December across London, Birmingham, Coventry, Newcastle and Edinburgh.
