The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), hosted in New York this week, didn’t just celebrate the biggest names in music: it proved that celebrities are embracing expression through nail art.

American singer & songwriter, Chappell Roan, made an impact with an extreme length, chrome sword-inspired set. This matched her medieval red carpet outfit, which included a velvet robe, armour and sword in hand. Nail artist, Juan Alvear, created the look using Aprés Nail products.

The medieval theme continued for the musician, who sported a shorter chrome style with ‘fire opal accents’ by Alvear, when performing and collecting the award for Best New Artist at the event. Here, she wore armour and chainmail outfits.

Juan Alvear was also busy tending to the nails of soulful singer, Teddy Swims, with a short red manicure featuring molten silver chrome tips, with an extended little fingernail. On Instagram, Alvear revealed how to recreate the look using OPI. He shared that the red base hue was Emmy, Have You Seen Oscar? and chrome powder used was Tin Man Can, which was applied over Black Onyx and Suzi Talks with Her Hands shades.

Other eye-catching nail designs from the night included Lil Nas X’s retro mix and match style by Mei Kawajiri of @nailsbymei, assisted by @yoko_nails_nyc. Complementing the musician’s pink and white superhero attire, which featured a motorcycle two-piece and horned helmet, the nail art included references to Back To The Future, Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog: all in bright pink.

Zola Ganzorigt of @nailsbyzola also served up a stylish white nail look with silver embellishments for Sabrina Carpenter, recipient of the Song of the Summer prize for ‘Espresso’. The glam design, created using OPI, dazzled alongside the celebrity’s vintage Bob Mackie dress.
