Hair and beauty booking platform, Treatwell, has revealed the UK locations with the highest rates of beauty no-show appointments.
The data reveals that salons across the UK lose up to £200,000 per month due to missed appointments, amounting to £1.6 billion in lost revenue annually.
Treatwell has found that Liverpool, Glasgow and Birmingham have the highest no-show rates and for cities across the UK, no-show rates peak during the summer months of June, July and August.
Gel nail services rank third in Treatwell’s list of beauty treatments receiving the most no-shows in the UK, with a 2.72% no-show rate (1 in 37). This follows sun beds and tanning appointments in first place (3.14% no-show rate) and make-up treatments in second place, with 1 in 36 appointments missed. In fifth place are nail extension and overlay services, with a 2.69% no-show rate.
No-shows can be detrimental to salons, with each missed appointment costing an average of £39. The research finds that this has forced many businesses to raise prices, and contributed to 17% of salons now requiring pre-payment, which has reduced no-shows by half.
To address this, Treatwell is launching the #TreatYourSalonWell campaign, encouraging clients to be more responsible and considerate with their bookings. This follows the brand’s Save Our Salons campaign: an initiative calling for VAT reductions to prevent widespread job losses and closures.
Joanna Christie, CMO of Treatwell, comments: “The financial strain on the UK’s hair and beauty industry is greater than ever, and no-shows are exacerbating the crisis. Every missed appointment represents lost income for salons already fighting to stay afloat, and our latest data highlights the urgent need for change.
“The #TreatYourSalonWell campaign is about encouraging customers to respect their bookings, helping businesses survive and thrive. By simply showing up or cancelling in advance, clients can make a real difference to the future of salons”.
