Ever wanted to know more about Team Scratch? Beauty intern, Amara Jarrett, quizzes assistant editor, Kat Hill, about her role, the industry and her love for nails…
AJ: What is your role at Scratch?
KH: I started working at Scratch in July 2015, so I’ve been here for two years now. I used to write for various building material magazines, so moving over to Scratch has been a fantastic contrast.
I was recently promoted to assistant editor, so this involves working on a lot of different aspects across the magazine, the website and social media. I also organise Scratch’s annual photographic competition, The Great Scratch Shoot Out!
AJ: Is writing something that you’ve always wanted to do?
KH: Yes! However, I didn’t actually train as a journalist; I studied Creative Writing and English Literature at university. I’ve always enjoyed writing, but I never thought I would be a journalist. With such a love for nails, writing for Scratch everyday is living the dream.
AJ: What would you say is the best part about your job?
KH: I have such a love for nails and working at Scratch has really opened my eyes; it made me aware of how big the nail industry really is.
I love having the opportunity to meet nail technicians; everyone in this industry really loves what they do and I think that’s rare. I enjoy writing about their careers and hearing their stories.
Plus, I love hearing about new product launches and heading to training days to see both products and techs in action!
AJ: Which features in the magazine do you enjoy writing the most?
KH: I really enjoy writing about latest products, as well getting to grips with the science behind them. An understanding of this science is so important and should always be explored.
AJ: Are there any particular nail technicians that you would like to meet and interview?
KH: There are so many celebrity nail technicians and session nail technicians that I would love to interview. I’m really intrigued by the whole world of session styling; it would be so interesting to hear all about their experiences.
AJ: Which beauty products do you love at the moment?
KH: I’m actually really looking forward to the autumn/ winter colour collections, which will be launching any day now. They usually include lots of dark, glamourous colours and sparkling glitters in time for the new season.
AJ: How do you wear your nails?
KH: It depends! Some days I’ll go for bold, statement nails; I love wearing glitters and dark shades. Some days I don’t wear anything at all and leave my nails natural.
I’m also a big fan of nail art. I’ll finish off a nail look with some freehand art. I gained my manicure and gel polish certificate last year, so I love doing my nails and really enjoy the challenge of freehand art.
AJ: What advice would you give to upcoming journalists?
KH: I’d say follow what you enjoy. It can be easy to refine the skills needed to become a good journalist, but you need to have the actual want and desire for your subject matter. This only comes from a place of passion. Also, study hard and develop a good grasp of the English language!
