London’s V&A Museum hosted Nailed It. Marian Newman & Nick Knight with Mimma Viglezio, an evening discussion on Friday 10 May that focused on the careers and collaborative efforts of the esteemed nail artist and renowned fashion photographer.
The lecture theatre was packed with photography and nail fanatics, all keen to learn more about Marian and Nick’s favourite photo shoots and stories behind some of fashion’s most iconic artistry and images.
I arrived early and took a seat at the front to witness the discussion, which was led by creative consultant and editor of SHOWStudio, Mimma Viglezio. Marian revealed how she entered the session nail world following a career as a forensic scientist, wishing to work in a role around raising her three children.
Marian and Nick recalled their first meeting, with Nick revealing the importance of nails in photo shoots. He commented:
“Nails are the end of the movement. Not doing nails is like not punctuating a sentence or finishing a melody.”
He also revealed that fashion photography favours elongation, such as long limbs. Nail extensions aid this elongation.
Anecdotes featured throughout the hour-long talk, with Nick and Marian revealing that Lady Gaga is fascinating to work with; with strong ideas and a creative mindset.
“I love the studio dynamic,” Marian revealed. “I have met so many incredible and interesting people throughout my career and the challenge keeps me going. I love if a brief involves something unusual!”
As images from photo shoots Marian and Nick had worked on flashed in the background, they detailed the concept behind each and Marian mused over why she chose each nail look.
The talk also marked the publication of Marian Newman’s new book, Nailed It: Nails Fashion Technique, which celebrates her 30-year career.
Following the talk, hoards of guests joined a queue to have their copy signed by Marian, and numerous nail industry faces were in attendance and to show support. Such attendees included Samantha and Samuel Sweet of Sweet Squared, educator Anna Lee and Scratch Stars finalists Metta Francis, Antonia Catalano, Jennie Nippard and Sarah Poulten. We chatted over a wine reception before managing to get a snap with Marian before the museum closed for the evening.
