Seasonal & Occasions, Step by Step

You’re a mean one, Mr Grinch! UK freehand nail artist, Gemma Dawson, has created this Grinch nail design, perfect for the festive season.

Step 1
Paint a nail tip a light green gel polish colour, cure, then apply a non-wipe top coat and cure.
Step 2
Using a dark green or black gel paint, add a small mushroom shape in the centre of the tip and paint a vertical line down from it.
Step 3
Paint a lopsided semicircle at the bottom of the vertical line.
Step 4
Paint a line across that, to make the Grinch's pouting lip. Cure.
Step 5
Directly above each side of the nose, paint two dark green curved lines and cure.
Step 6
Add two black lines that curve in the opposite direction and meet in the middle. These will become the eyebrows.
Step 7
Bring the black lines under and join them up to make two eye shapes. Cure.
Step 8
Leave a gap before painting four dark green semicircles above the brows.
Step 9
Use where the circles end as a guide to join up the outline of the Grinch's head shape, and bring his chin to a point in the dark green hue.
Step 10
Whilst the gel is still wet, use a thicker brush to drag out the edges. This will create the appearance of fur. Cure.
Step 11
Paint the Grinch's eyes with a white gel paint and his nose dark green. Also paint a line of dark green under his lip. Cure.
Step 12
Paint the lip pink and cure.
Step 13
Start filling in the eyebrows with black gel and the head area with dark green. Use the thicker brush to drag the product to give a furry finish. Cure.
Step 14
Using the same dragging technique, paint the rest of the Grinch's face with a green gel that is a few shades lighter, apart from around his nose. Cure.
Step 15
Add more dark green to the face, layering and dragging to make the Grinch look furry. Cure. Paint some green mixed with top coat on the underside of the eyes, to create a shadow. Cure.
Step 16
Add some finer lines of dark green or black to outline the fur. Also add some black to the nostrils and cure. Paint the Grinch's irises using a bright midtone green. Cure.
Step 17
Outline the eyes in black and add pupils. Then, using a fine liner brush, add thin black lines to the brows to give definition and make them look bushier. Cure. Blacken around the Grinch's eyes and brows, and add any additional fur. Cure.
Step 18
Using a fine liner brush, paint a few thin lines of pale green gel through the brows and on top of the nose to act as a highlight. Cure.
Step 19
Apply top coat and cure to finish.
