Barbie & Ken nails
Step by Step
Glitterbels ambassador, Emma Laverton, shares how to paint our favourite doll duo, Barbie and Ken, on nails using products from the brand, in this fun step-by-step.
Step 1
For Barbie, paint Hema Free Gel Polish in Almond Crunch over the entire nail and cure, followed by a coat of Unbelievabel Gel in Feeling Natural. Once cured, buff to mattify the finish and use a pencil to sketch Barbie’s portrait. For Ken, paint two coats of Hema Free Gel Polish in Peaches & Cream over the nail, curing between each coat. Apply No Wipe Top Coat, cure, then buff the nail. Draw the sketch of Ken on the nail with a pencil.
Step 2
Paint Barbie's eye using Hema Free Gel Polish in White and Unbelievabel Gels in Blue Avenue and Blow Out, ensuring that you flash cure in between each colour application for 10 seconds to prevent bleeding. Use Unbelievabel Gel in The Coolest to paint a light ring around the eye. Outline its shape using Unbelievabel Gel shades, Black and Bold Babe. Next, outline the nose and lines of the face using Unbelievabel Gel in Spicy, and the lips and teeth with Hema Free Gel Polish in White and Unbelievabel Gel in Unmissable. Paint Barbie’s hair using Unbelievabel Gel in Cream Cake and cure. For Ken, add colour to the eye using White Hema Free Gel Polish and Unbelievabel Gels in Black, Hug Me, Vivid Velvet and The Coolest, flash curing between each shade. Use Unbelievabel Gel in Don't Be Bitter for the lips, and a mix of Unbelievabel Gels in Black and Sweet Syrup for the eyebrow. Cure.
Step 3
Wipe away the pencil sketches on both designs with an alcohol wipe. For Barbie, place two dots of Feeling Natural onto a palette, mixing one dot with Spicy and Sweet Syrup. Mix the other dot with Unbelievabel Gel in Bare All and White Hema Free Gel Polish. Paint the contours of Barbie’s face using the darker mix and its highlights with the other. Don't cure until the blend is smooth. For Ken, create shadows on the face using the same method as in the Barbie design. Mix Unbelievabel Gels in Feeling Natural, Sweet Syrup, Spicy and Sass Pot, and use to paint contours. Cure when complete.
Step 4
For Barbie, use the blending method to build highlights and shadows on the face, particularly around the nose. Add Bold Babe and Sweet Syrup to the colour mix for shadows, to darken the shade as needed. Use Unbelievabel Gels in Affair, Unmissable and I Love You to add dimension to the lips and Unbelievabel Gel shade, Retro, to create the crease of the eyeshadow. Blend out with Unmissable mixed with No Wipe Top Coat, and use this method to add colour to the cheeks. Cure. For Ken, add highlights by mixing Unbelievabel Gels in Feeling Natural, Zen and Cream Cake to create a yellow undertone, as Ken is more tanned than Barbie. Blend and add shadows where needed, flash curing the details.
Step 5
Paint Barbie’s hair in stripes using a thin nail art brush and Zen, Cream Cake, Sweet Syrup and Spicy. Flash cure as required. Use Hema Free Gel Polish in Caramel Cuteness to add dimension and cure. For Ken, use Unbelievabel Gels in Don't Be Bitter, Worth The Squeeze, Sweet Syrup and Spicy, to paint the lips, flash curing between each shade. Apply the same method to the brow bone and nose, using the shadow and highlight mixes from before. Cure.
Step 6
Perfect Barbie’s eyeliner and add eyelashes using Black Unbelievabel Gel. Add small lines or dots of Hema Free Gel Polish in White to brighten the eyes and create shine on the lips. Cure, apply a layer of No Wipe Top Coat and cure to finish. For Ken, add highlights to the eye and mouth using White Hema Free Gel Polish, and add lines of Sass Pot and Black to define his hair and eyebrow. Cure, apply a coat of No Wipe Top Coat and cure to finish.
