Why nail technicians should enter the Scratch Stars Awards: tips from a nail competition maestro

Bespoke nail artist, Jiak Hing, who has won the Scratch Stars Gel Polish Stylist of the Year accolade for three consecutive years, shares insight into the competition, what to expect on the day and the benefits of entering.

Why did you decide to enter the Scratch Stars Awards?

To challenge myself and test my skills against the best in the industry. Many nail artists I admire inspired me to take this leap, and I saw the competition as the perfect opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and pursue my goals. Although it was nerve-wracking, the excitement and growth made it an unforgettable experience.

How did you feel before the judging day? And how did you find the day itself?

I was incredibly nervous and overwhelmed, but being prepared helped me stay focused. I went through a checklist to ensure everything was ready. For example, my tools, my model and my plan were all in place to prevent any issues.

The day itself was both nerve-wracking and emotional. To overcome my nerves, I kept reminding myself that I was ready and capable. My model, Jamie, was an amazing support. Her calm nature and constant reassurance gave me confidence and encouragement. The day went as smoothly as possible, thanks to my thorough preparation.

What did you have to do?

For the gel polish category, I had to create a nail design within 60 minutes using gel polishes, showcasing creativity and technique. This was followed by a face-to-face interview. I decided to try different techniques by painting a set inspired by Sumi-e, the Japanese black ink painting style. My finished design incorporated Yin and Yang features, using black and white backgrounds, and I added elements of earth and water, represented by fish and birds.

How did you feel when you found out you won for the third year in a row?

I was overjoyed and couldn’t believe it at first. It felt surreal. Winning felt like receiving an Oscar and was truly one of the best moments of my life. I’m so grateful to Scratch for giving me this opportunity.

I couldn’t have done this without the support of my friends, family and clients, who continuously provide me with advice, ideas and encouragement. Sharing this incredible journey with them has been so rewarding.

What was your favourite part of the Scratch Stars party?

The highlight for me was meeting so many icons in the industry. Speaking with them and learning from their experiences was inspiring. The event itself was incredible, with great entertainment, food and an atmosphere that made the night truly memorable.

Why would you urge other nail techs to enter Scratch Stars?

Scratch Stars is a chance to step outside your comfort zone and push yourself to grow. It’s helped me grow both personally and professionally. It has fuelled my passion and opened doors to new opportunities for my business. Entering competitions may seem intimidating, but they are incredibly exciting and rewarding. They give you a chance to refine your skills, build confidence and create amazing memories.

I’ve also made some lifelong friendships during this experience—Paiwa (@paiwaloves) and Jen (@swaknails), who have also served as a constant source of inspiration.

What did you learn from the experience?

It has taught me to value continuous learning and to never stop striving for improvement. There’s always room to grow, and being surrounded by talented professionals motivated me to reach for new heights and goals. I’ve also gained appreciation for the hard work and dedication this craft requires.
