Have you noticed white spots appearing on your nails? This could be leukonychia – here’s everything you need to know…
What is leukonychia?
This refers to discolouration, which often appears as white dots or lines on the nail. According to book, Milady’s Art & Science Nail Technology, the cause of this is typically trauma and injury to the nail matrix, sometimes from nail biting. However, underlying health conditions or the use of certain medications can also trigger the condition.

Does this look familiar?
How can leukonychia be treated?
White areas will grow out with the nail, and cannot be corrected. However, you can safely continue receiving nail services and mask with a nail colour of your choice.
Nail education platform, NailKnowledge, recommends avoiding aggressive manicure techniques and prioritising warm treatments, such as hot paraffin and oil manicures.
To avoid the condition and prevent reoccurrence, Tanya Jeskins, Scratch Stars Natural Nail Specialist of the Year finalist 2024, suggests regular manicures or pedicures, daily cuticle oil use and a plan to prevent nail biting, if applicable.
