Scratch catches up with Jeniene Van Dort of 50 Shades of Nails, a home-based salon in Melbourne, Australia, about her life as a nail tech…

“I studied and qualified as a nail technician at a nail school in Melbourne, Victoria in 2011 when my son first started school. It was something that I had always wanted to do – and given that I found myself having more free time, I jumped at the chance! If I wasn’t doing nails, I would probably just be doing my other job, working as a freight forwarder, which I currently work as part-time, and I would focus on raising my son.

Why is it so important for techs to advance their nails skills and artistry?

“It is extremely important for techs to continue learning and keeping up with new techniques, products and services to give their clients the best possible service. In my opinion, there is no better feeling  than seeing your clients with healthy nails. I love to learn and create all types of nail art…the more challenging, the better! Detailed hand drawn designs and anything with depth and sparkle are my favourite to create.”

If you had to pick one, what nail colour would characterise your personality?

“I would choose red, for its energy and boldness – it’s an exciting colour, and I always love my clients to walk out feeling excited about their new set of nails when their service is complete. It’s tough to just choose one though!”

What is your all-time favourite nail product?

“This is an easy choice – the whole range from The Gel Bottle Inc. I have never used a better range of products, and my clients love them too. I specifically like working with the brand’s Builder in a Bottle.”

Tell us about an average day in your nail life…

“The average day in my nail life isn’t too busy. I only do nails part time, so sometimes I have one or two clients in the morning. I have a break in between for mum duties and then a few more clients. I always try to mix up clients who have plain sets and nail art, but I always look forward to each appointment to laugh and chat to my amazing clients!”
