Scratch chats to Mariola Sieczka of Holy Nails ! about her tips for new nail techs and the importance of constantly developing skills…
I’m a Polish nail tech, wife, and mother and have been living in Scotland since 2014. I have always been interested in nails and am constantly trying to develop my skills. I’ve been taking advantage of the available opportunities for growth that the pandemic has offered, as it has given me a considerable amount of free time.
I’ve been completing lots of different courses over the lockdown periods which has been really helpful for my personal growth. Our industry is extremely fast paced, so it’s really important to keep up with the latest trends and popular skills.
What I have noticed during my time as a nail tech is that we have to constantly concentrate on the fact that we have different types of nails to work with, whether that’s growing down, rising up or bitten. Of course there are others, but these are the types I think we work on the most. You have to tailor each set to the different nail types, which means every single client brings something new. This is one of my favourite things about being a nail tech, and really has me hooked! I love that every day and every client is different.
I absolutely love creating any and every kind of nail art. It’s definitely my favourite thing about creating nails! I love thin lines, ornaments and all kinds of hand-made decorations. It’s so much fun to create nail art and I love the creative freedom it offers.
For me, a normal day is when my calendar is full of clients. It’s a lot of work but I always get excited about it! It’s best when my clients say, “do what you want and it will be beautiful as always” – nothing makes me happier than when they give me the freedom to create something unique.
For beginner nail stylists, I would suggest is that they should train with professionals from the very beginning, to acquire good habits and correct techniques from the start. It’s good practise, and sets you up with good habits to take forward as you progress.
It is very important to learn the correct techniques from the very beginning and constantly develop your skills, as there is always potential to grow, change and develop. Our industry has recently evolved a lot. New products, techniques and decorations are being created all the time. We must always be on top of the latest trends if we want to have customers, because the competition is really big and skills are what distinguish us.
