TECH TALK: Jess Rose of Jess Rose Beauty

Scratch chats with Jess Rose, of Jess Rose Beauty in Thrapston, Northamptonshire, about her love for Magpie Beauty and passion for nails.

“I’m Jess, I’m 27 and I live in Northamptonshire. My nail career is short and sweet but an incredible journey so far. I have always loved doing nails since I was a teenager so when I decided to train to become a nail technician after having my two children, it all came very naturally to me and I qualified back in February 2018. I started off with my clients being family and friends, but then became self-employed from my little home salon in January 2019 and I have never looked back!

“In July 2020, I became a brand ambassador for the amazing Magpie Beauty which is definitely the highlight of my career so far. I discovered Magpie through my love of all things glittery and, of course, watching the amazing Anona Philippa on YouTube!

“I love an abstract nail. It’s my favourite to create, I don’t think you can beat an abstract nail as you can just whack it all on and not have to worry about being super precise. I love that it is slightly different every single time too.

“My favourite professional Magpie range to work the gel range. The colours are absolutely beautiful and are really pigmented. And, Give Me Strength is an absolute game changer for nails – I love how versatile it is.

“Growing a large following on social media is something I have struggled so much with myself, but I think that my top tips would be to post something every day, whether it’s on actual hands or just on display tips – show what you can do! Secondly, to interact with other accounts, to use hashtags on your photos when posting, tag the products/brands you are using, and lastly, remember to post on your Instagram Stories too.

“My most reached for products from Magpie are definitely Give Me Strength, Don’t Be Tacky, Come What May (as it’s just so versatile for full sheer colour, behind designs for abstract or over the top for opals etc) the new Full Foiled (game changer for full coverage and foil line work) and the flakes.

“My nail career goals for the next two years are to take on a few more clients once my youngest goes into education full time. I would also love to offer 1-1 workshops or something along those lines in the future as I love helping others and sharing my techniques!

“My favourite Magpie nail art range to work with is so hard to choose. I’m tempted to say glitter but my love for flakes slightly tops it. I feel like flakes are just so versatile and pretty, and they look amazing in any design. They are also super easy to apply – very effective!

“I am inspired by so many people in the nail industry and all for different reasons but, if I would have to say a couple I would say, the lovely Anona Philippa and Isabel May. I have watched their YouTube videos adn tutorials right from before I even became a nail technician. They both just inspired me right from the start and continue to inspire me daily! They are both lovely and are always there to help with any questions. The love and helpfulness they have for others in the industry is so inspiring.

“My advice for techs who have just begun their nail career would be do not doubt yourself. We all start at the beginning and can still make mistakes now, and that is okay! The key is confidence, practice and to not be afraid to ask others for help or advice. You will and you can achieve anything you put your mind to.”
