Rebecca Crawforth, of Navy Professional, shares her tips for selecting and maintaining the nail tools in your tekking kit…

“Invest in your tools and products,” explains Rebecca Crawforth, owner of Navy Professional. “Jobs should be carried out using equipment which makes you feel confident. Scrap cheaper alternatives and invest in products that work and highlight your capabilities.

“We recommend following three simple steps:

  1. Clean: Clean your tools using a detergent
  2. Disinfect: Disinfect your tools using a 70% alcohol-based disinfectant following the manufacture instructions exactly as they are written
  3. Dry: Dry your tooling so they are free from any excess water.”

“To keep your tools in top condition, I’d also recommend the following:

  • Store vertically not horizontally
  • Do not steep in fluid longer than manufactures guidelines
  • Ensure they are kept dry and free from contamination between treatments
  • Give them a warm soapy bath at the end of every day, dry and then store in an airtight container until ready to use
  • Only use them for what they designed for. For example, don’t cut off crystals with cuticle nippers that are designed to trim dead skin.
  • Take pride in your own tools
  • Do not use anything other than hygiene products that are designed for tools – no bleach or household products
  • Once they have rust or pit, throw them away
  • Always use a lubricant on all joints
