Staffordshire tech: Working from a home salon has been the best decision I’ve made

Katie Pritchard of Katie Lou Nail Artist and Educator opens her salon’s doors to Scratch and shares the benefits of becoming a home-based tech.
Having been in the nail industry for 20 years, Katie has experimented with a variety of ways of working. She says: “I have worked as a mobile tech, rented a chair and owned a studio and salon.” However, last year the pro decided that working from a home setup would be most suitable for her family and mental health.
Her husband began building a cabin salon in their garden in October 2024, and her dream space was complete in December of that year, opening its doors to clients on New Year’s Eve.
“I love that I can now spend more time with my husband, children and dog, as I can wander in and out of the house between clients,” says Katie. “I don’t have to worry about childcare and don’t feel as drained as in previous roles.”
Clients are welcomed via a separate entrance and can choose from a wide list of treatments. “I offer builder gel, hard gel, gel polish, full cover gel extension and L&P acrylic services,” shares Katie, who has used Hara Professional for the last 10 years. “The brand is available in my local Aston and Fincher store and I’ve been an ambassador since 2021. It has given me many amazing opportunities!” The tech displays her products in Hara Gel Polish Wall Displays: her favourite part of the salon.
She continues: “I have also used Nail Order since it launched in 2020. It’s easy to use, straightforward to teach to students and the team are so friendly and cooperative.”
Clients can expect a relaxing experience at Katie’s salon, as she shares: “The cabin has a cosy, chic vibe. My favourite colour is pink, so it was only natural for it to be in the branding for my business. There’s always music on in the background, and if my dog is feeling brave and wants to say hello, there’s the option of dog cuddles!”
Looking forward, the tech wants to maintain a successful client base. “I would also like to focus my education offerings on helping qualified nail techs improve their skills and increase their confidence,” she adds.
