Sinead Bulley on perfecting a home salon setup

It can be tricky to get the balance right between homely and professional when working from a home-based salon. One of your unique selling point may be offering a welcoming space in which clients can fully relax, rather than a busy salon environment. However, it is important to still present services professionally and to create a difference between your home and workplace for the benefit of yourself and your clients.
Scratch Stars 2019 finalist, Sinead Bulley, has transformed her garden room in Cambridgeshire into a stylish home salon. “I think a great home setup is something that works best for you and your clients,” says Sinead. “When I opened The Nail Shack two years ago, I wanted my clients to feel completely relaxed and have everything they may need during an appointment, so I added extra little touches with a coffee bar and Wi-Fi.
“When creating a home salon environment, always check with your local council/authority to see if you need to ay business rates and to notify them that you’re running a business form home. Also, let your neighbours know that there may be more cars around. Make it as professional as you can so that your clients enjoy coming and that they have a relaxing time – have some facilities to make them a drink so they feel cared for. I would also really recommend keeping it as separate from your home as possible, as that way you can then close the door at the end of the day and leave work at work.
“In terms of décor, really think about what space you have to work with, what furniture you really need and where you can put it. For accessories, use your work if you have entered competitions – or even just been practicing – and pop it on the walls. I have a little gallery of mixed media boxes, photographic images and practice nail tips: its such a good way of displaying your work for clients to see and a great talking point!”
