Security

Liz McKeon, beauty business expert at www.lizmckeon.com shares some tips on how to keep your business and finances safe…

A secure setup

” I would suggest investing in a quality alarm system and place security cameras throughout your premises. Review this annually, always mindful of changes in the area.

“Ensure your staff understand emergency processes and protocols; supply them with a contact list of emergency numbers for staff at hand. This should also apply to issues of personal safety during the day in the business itself.”

Payments

“Encourage clients to pay by card; this will reduce the amount of cash being handled. It’s a simple and effective technique to avoid mistakes but also to reduce the opportunity for potential theft.

“It also streamlines your accounting and saves time, too. Imagine being a cashless business and not having to cash up every day. This advice applies to single operators, mobile and larger businesses.  When lodging cash vary the time and route to the bank.

“If you do accept cash payments, empty your till regularly.”

Employee theft

“Employee theft and shoplifting are the two top issues you my face when it comes to stock and inventory.

“Unfortunately, one of the biggest security challenges you face as a business owner is from staff. Do not put temptation in people’s way. Have very strict and tight stock management systems in place for both professional and retail stock. Monitor your security cameras and manage your appointment books to ensure all appointment transactions are correct.

“Monitor no shows and cancellations to make they are real.  Limit access to your tills and consider investing in regular mystery client audits for your business.”
