Alice Morrey took the plunge to set up her own home-based salon in 2021, opening when lockdown eased.
“I’ve been doing nails since 2011, mainly on myself, family and friends. Everyone who knows me has been pushing me to set up my own salon for ages, and I finally decided to when I moved into a new house with space to set it up. I haven’t looked back since. I work part-time alongside a full-time job in marketing, and I’ve been fully booked since I opened which is amazing!”
“I expanded from working at my kitchen table in my old house to having a full salon in the spare bedroom at my new house,” Alice reveals. “For now, I have no plans to expand further, because I really enjoy it as it is.
“It’s the perfect set up for me at this time in my life, as it’s just me working there.”
“My clients often comment that being in my home makes them feel at ease.
“My clients are always letting me know that they like that it’s one-to-one with me, rather than in a busy salon,” she shares. “I think this also helps to create a comfortable atmosphere.”
“I like to think I bring a homely feel, where people can come and chat about anything and everything with no fear of judgement.”
“I offer gel manicures and pedicures with nail art. I specialise in nail art on the natural nail.
“All the products in my salon are from Magpie Beauty,” Alice says. “I was lucky enough to be made a brand ambassador for them, and I absolutely love the products. My clients come back with no chips and rave about how strong it keeps their nails.”
“I really struggled at first to know what I wanted to do with the décor,” she recalls. “I knew I wanted the salon to feel calming and homely, but I wasn’t sure where to start.
When we ripped up the carpet in there, we discovered the original floorboards, and from there I knew how I wanted it to look.”
“My husband sanded and varnished the floor, and then I worked with Lick Paints to choose the perfect shade for the feature wall.
“The tall shelves were left by the previous owners,” Alice explains. “I felt they would work well for my glitters and for storage, and the rest of the furniture just fell into place from there.”
“I knew that I wanted a mirror with my logo on,” she comments. “As my logo is circular, I knew it would work perfectly for a circular mirror, and so I had a local company create a decal.
“The décor gives it a calming feel, I like people to feel at ease in my salon and I believe the décor helps with that.”
