Salon in the Spotlight: OMY Nails, Halifax

Inspired to combine her creativity and passion for nails, Carrie Sleath found herself drawn to the world of nail art. “I did Art and Design at college and did an evening course in cosmetic beauty,” Carrie reveals. “I began a career in radio but did a nail course on the side but didn’t really do anything with the qualification. Back in 2011, I came across WAH Nails on Instagram and realised this style of nails combined my love of beauty, art and the qualification and knowledge I had gained with my training.”

This bolt of inspiration saw Carrie reach for her kit and practise. “Fast forward a few years to 2014, I left radio and opened OMY Nails. As my job was in Leeds and my new salon in Halifax, I started with no clients and no experience of ever working in another salon environment. I’m a strong believer in if you want something hard enough then you’ll find a way to make it work – no matter how haphazard your beginnings may be.

“And that’s what we did. After a year of working alone, Abi and Sophie joined the gang and after four years of being open moved to our new, bigger, badder than ever premises closer to Halifax town centre. The salon just took on a make up artist, Eloise, who is incredible.

“I’d describe our interior as sassy and ‘bad-assy’!” laughs Carrie. “The salon is just full of the things that make us happy. We never wanted to create a sterile environment and more create the feeling of just being with your friends. Basically, we just want to be friends with everyone and create a non-intimidating environment for newbies and experienced nail clients alike. We believe our interior helps us accomplish. Oh, and we love neon lights. I can’t stop myself from buying them!

“We use The Gel Bottle and CND Shellac™ in the salon, as well Apres Gel- X Extensions and Young Nails. Our specialism is nail art – it’s what started the whole thing! We keep up to date with all new trends and what is emerging because we just love to create these designs. We’re passionate about learning and experimenting and because it’s the main thing we offer, we get to dedicate our time to that one specialism each day. It’s the dream!”
