After running her salon in the high street of Driffield town centre between 2011 and 2017, Diane Wilson moved her salon to her summerhouse.

“I was an A level teacher, but a horrific car accident put me in a wheelchair, so that was when I changed career to the nail and beauty industry,” Diane remembers. “Teaching has always been my forte, so when I thought I was good enough to pass on my knowledge, I started to teach in this industry too.”

“I became an educator in 2019 and with Crystal Nails UK since January 2020. I would like to become solely an educator and have a large training school, so that I can help the next generation of young people educate to their maximum potential.

“Education is key in any industry, but with ours there is so much to learn and so many courses to do so we can be better,” she smiles. “I have done 53 courses and I’m still doing more all the time, you can never say you know it all! Just don’t get complacent.”

“My salon is mainly grey, because it’s a hot favourite of most of my ladies and gents. I want it to feel sophisticated but welcoming. The salon is decorated with all my certificates. It’s not so I can brag, it’s because I am so proud of where I have come.

“I needed the salon to function for my disability, and that is one of the reasons why I decorated it with the certificates. I have young girls coming in all the time – I want them to be able to see that nothing should hold you back,” Diane explains. “People come into the summerhouse and say, ‘wow that’s a lot of certificates’, and my response has always been ‘I still have a lot to learn’.”

“No person, no disability, no excuses should hold you back. If you want to be the best then make it work.”

“I think my salon is different because I care. I go that extra mile, I want to be able to see the satisfaction on my clients face and know that I did a great job, that I didn’t rush, that I made sure they always go home with what they want. If I can help them in any way, I do that.

“I’m always learning, showing my clients new techniques, new products and new styles. I just eat, sleep and breathe my job!”
