Looking to make the jump into session styling? Robbie Tomkins shares his top tips…

Work hard and try to grab every opportunity that comes your way. You never know whom you might meet and where it could lead. It’s unfortunate that a lot of session work is unpaid, but that one job that’s miles away, and doesn’t feel worth it could end with you meeting a photographer that books you for a big beauty campaign.

When I arrive on set or at a show people usually assume I’m a hairdresser or makeup artist and can be surprised when I mention I’m a manicurist. I know one of the keys to my success has been being a male in a female-dominated industry, especially in the session world. While I wouldn’t say it isn’t the only reason for my success, it has certainly helped me stand out and be recognised within the industry.

I try to arrive at every job with an attitude of curiosity and not expectation. If I’m curious about how the day could go and think about what I can bring to it instead of what I can take, I have a great experience. I also try not to indulge in the gossip and hearsay that can sometimes be rife in this industry. I like to encourage and support people both in and out of the session world to be the best they can be. I try to treat others as I would like to be treated. I try to be kind, loving and honest.

There is so much talent in this industry but unfortunately techs and their work aren’t always getting the credit they deserve. Nails are becoming a much more integral part of shoots and fashion shows however I feel there is still a long way to go achieving the full recognition we deserve.
