Thinking of making the big move to a new salon location? Consider these pointers when selecting a new location…

When choosing a location, consider at the level of passing trade; will you be able to entice this footfall through the salon door? Is this going to affect the success of you business? Walk in your client’s shoes, literally; look at how easy to find the location is and its transport links or parking facilities.

Also take some time to look at your nearby competition and surrounding businesses. While you should be analysing your competition and their rivalry, also take note of the business around that will complement your offering.

Consider the size and layout of the new premises, as well as its appearance both inside and out. Ask about the premise’s utilities, including drainage and electricity. Does the property require planning permission to become a salon?

Also, be sure to keep your clients and employees in mind – are the toilet and kitchen facilities adequate? Is the access good for everyone, including disabled customers? Is there parking?

Think about your business in the long run. Is there the potential to alter or expand the premises? How does the property fit your long-term business goals?

Remember, the price of moving may be higher than expected with little unexpected costs incurring along the way. Be sure you plan for those surprises as a well as factor in the income loss you may face from the business downtime the move may cause.

Besides the initial fees and purchase costs, be sure to budget for alterations and decorating needed to trade as soon as possible, as well as any legal alteration that may be needed to meet regulations, such as fire or health and safety needs.

Be sure to also consider the ongoing costs, such as rent, utility charges, business rate, maintenance and repair work that may be needed in the future. Don’t forget to check the new location’s internet and phone lines connections.

Remember, consult your solicitor or legal advisor at any stage if you have any concerns.
