Scratch chats with Mayuko Kondo of Nails by Mayu, about her nail journey from Japan to LA, and her love for creating stunning nail art.
When I was a child, my aunt would polish my nails for me. It was a way for us to bond, which established nails as something really special to me. Ever since, I have been completely obsessed with nails.
I love seeing how happy my clients are when I finish a set of beautiful nails for them. I studied nails in Japan, and from there, I worked in the same nail salon for seven years, however I began to feel like I needed a change. I decided to move to the United States, where I worked in a Japanese nail salon in Los Angeles for six years. Following this, I decided it was time to open my own salon! It’s been an incredible experience. The people here are so great and I absolutely love all of my clients.
I don’t actually have a particular signature style, but I do enjoy the Japanese art style which uses small details. I also adore a simple ombré design, as well as 3D nail art and airbrush nail art designs. I love when clients allow me to do whatever I please on their nails as it allows my creativity to flow, however, if clients come in their own design ideas, I am always happy to work with whatever they suggest.
My favourite nail product to use is Presto Gel. I love the wide variety of colours to choose from in the range, and how the products are easy to remove.
This nail design is inspired by California’s ocean waves. I wanted to make an elegant design for summer, back when the weather was warmer. I also used some big Swarovski stones for the extra sparkle!
I am thankful to have a career where I can meet different people every day. My clients come from all walks of life, and I love learning from their experiences and hearing their stories. They inspire me to work harder, and push myself a bit further. I love having a personal connection with my clients.
After the beginning of my nail career in Japan in 2006, I have since moved halfway across the world to live and work in Los Angeles. I truly believe that I am currently living in the highlight of my career. I have a small salon where I can tend to my clients, and I am constantly growing, both in my personal life and career.
I that hope people of any age and gender can enjoy my nail art. I would like for everyone to know, regardless of who they are or how they identify, how fun it is to wear nail art, and how amazing it can feel.
