Rebecca Mackie of RMNAILTECH chats with Scratch about why she loves tekking and her hopes for her future in the industry…
“I always tailor my nail art to my clients requests, I so have a wide ranging style,” Rebecca shares. “However, my signature nail style is definitely hand painted mix and match or abstract. I love painting swirls, which have been on trend for a few years now, I hope the swirl trend never ends!
“I love painting different intricate designs on each nail. Although this is time consuming, as I am definitely a perfectionist, the end result is always worth it!”
“I source my inspiration for nails mainly from abstract and retro art,” Rebecca reveals. “This is reflected through my mix and match style nails.
“Instagram and Pinterest are both great platforms to source inspiration from. I love how diverse nail designs are, you can source inspiration from almost everything.”
“If I was to characterise my personality with a nail shade, it would definitely be pastel colours.
“If I had to pick one exact shade, it would be pink,” she says. “Specifically, Marilyn from The GelBottle.”
“I absolutely love being creative and using my artistic skills to create bespoke nail designs to suit my clients requirements,” Rebecca beams. “I love the the element of creating designs to reflect their personality.
“I love how there are endless opportunities within the nail industry, there is always so much more you can learn and plenty of courses available to work your way up.”
“It’s a very rewarding job, being able to make people feel so good about themselves.”
“Although I have a full time job and only do nails on a part time basis, I have been able to build and generate a regular clientele basis and succeeded in building a great reputation.
“I have been approached with several job offers within salons,” she divulges. “It’s definitely reassuring and a great confidence boost.”
“My hopes for the future is to eventually go full time with my nail business,” Rebecca comments. “I have always dreamed of having my own full time business.
“I would also love to expand my knowledge and further my training to become an educator one day.”
“My best advice would be to invest in trustworthy, reputable training,” she recommends. “Do your extensive research before committing to a brand, as quality tools and products are key.
“Never compare yourself to other nail technicians, you are on your own personal journey and it doesn’t matter how long it takes for you to master it.
“As a nail tech, you’re learning new techniques every day and finding your own way of doing things through experience.”
“It’s important for techs to remember to not beat themselves up,” Rebeca notes. “We all have bad days and should never let this knock our confidence.
“Another piece of advice I’d give is to master a good prep routine, as prep is one of the most important parts of ensuring a high quality long lasting manicure.”
“It’s been said plenty times before but practise is key.
“The time during the lockdown was a blessing in disguise for my small business,” she reflects. “I spent every single evening creating designs and setting new challenges for myself which has certainly helped me get to where I am today.”
