Scratch chats to Jessica Smith of The Nail Club about growing up in a family of nail technicians and leaving an office job to pursue nails full time…

Coming from a family of nail technicians, I have grown up watching my mum and auntie create such beautiful sets of nails. This is definitely a reason why I’m hooked on nails – I aspire to be as good as them! The feeling of having a satisfied client is another reason. I love making my clients feel and look pretty.

My favourite design has to be an abstract set of nails where I can freestyle. I love being able to do a combination of different colours – colours you’d never think of putting together, and adding a little foil here and there to make them pop!

My signature nail style is definitely a classic white French tip, they just look so classy and effortless. My favourite product to use is the Nail Artists UK 304 Warm Builder Gel. It has such a lovely natural pink undertone which suits all skin tones. I don’t think you can ever go wrong with a French tip, its definitely up there with my favourite designs to do.

I love to search #showscratch for my nail inspiration on Instagram. I literally scroll for hours and hours and save nail designs I like and want to try out! I tend to look at the most recently posted so whilst I’m scrolling, I can support other nail technicians and their posts too.

An average nail tech’s day isn’t so average for me. I was working full time in an office so all my nail appointments had been evenings and Saturdays, which was definitely keeping me busy busy busy! Having said that, I handed in my notice at my office job in July 2021 and became a full time nail technician in August of the same year and I couldn’t be more excited.

My hopes for my future in nails is to definitely have my own salon premises – that would be a real dream come true. To become a brand ambassador is definitely on my goals list to tick off also.
