Nail industry experts unite for exciting class & retreat in Clacton

Seven nail industry professionals travelled to The Royal Hotel in Clacton, Essex, for a class led by renowned nail expert, Georgie Smedley.
The business owner and former UK distributor of Gelish, fought an aggressive cancer during 2023 and is now back in good health, so invited industry colleagues for a two-day event that combined food, friendship and fun.
As well as nails, Georgie is passionate about Greek cooking, and hosts classes within The Big Fat Greek Taverna, the restaurant inside the seaside hotel she owns with husband, Jason.
A special gathering by the sea
The group of friends: Marian Newman BEM, Gigi Rouse, Jennie Nippard, Kay Dodd, Kym Moody, Alex Fox and Samantha Sweet, were eager to experience Georgie’s culinary offering. Marian Newman reflects on the day, commenting: “What a great way to spend 24 hours – with seven women who have been good friends for over 20 years, yet rarely have an opportunity to spend time together away from the business of nails. We met by the sea for 24 hours of fun, chatter, cocktails and jacuzzis!”
The day began with a cookery class led by Georgie, where the group learned to prepare a three-course Greek meal. Using the innovative Thermomix, a versatile kitchen appliance that Georgie praises as ‘a total game-changer’, the friends created pitta bread and hummus, Soutzoukakia (beef meatballs with rice in tomato sauce) and frozen Greek yogurt with honey.
“The Thermomix makes cooking so accessible,” Georgie explains. “It’s like having a personal sous-chef that does it all. Take béchamel sauce, for example – what used to take 30-minutes now takes 15, with zero effort.” She enthuses, “If you can cook, you’ll love it; if you can’t, this will turn you into a culinary genius.”
When asked what inspired her to diversify into Greek cookery classes, Georgie’s response is as vibrant as her personality. “I am a huge foodie!” she exclaims. With many of her recipes already in use at the restaurant, it seemed only natural to take the next step. Hosting cookery classes in the restaurant has been a thrilling chapter for Georgie. “So far, we’ve held three classes, one of which was for 12 children!” she shares.
Cooking, cocktails & connection
After spending the morning cooking, the group sat down to enjoy their delicious creations together. “Georgie’s organisation was fun, stress-free and so beautifully arranged,” shares Marian. “We ate our fill and had plenty to take home to feed the family the next day.”
After a well-deserved nap or a stroll along the seafront, the friends regrouped for dinner in the restaurant, where they continued to indulge in more mouth-watering Greek cuisine – this time, without lifting a finger. The evening was filled with laughter, great conversation and the joy of being together.
Some of the group then opted for a late-night soak in the hotel’s luxurious jacuzzis, while others, including Marian, turned in for the night, reflecting on a day well spent. “It was all over so soon with most of us wanting to stay another night or two,” she recalls.
A passion for sharing
Georgie’s Greek cookery classes have become a new way for her to share her love for food, teaching and community. Held approximately every other month, the classes are £80 per person and include unlimited cocktails – a fun addition to the culinary adventure. But Georgie isn’t stopping there. On 5 April 2025, she and Jason will host a special daytime cookery class, especially for nail professionals. It will be followed by an ABBA extravaganza evening, where guests can enjoy a hot Greek food buffet, dress up in 70s-themed attire and dance the night away. To book, email Georgie: georgiesmedley@gmail.com or call 07956 121 616.
Reflecting on her recent class with industry colleagues, Georgie shares: “It was such a pleasure to be the host for some very special friends.” The success of the event has already led the group to book another session for next year, this time extending the stay and including an 80s-themed evening event. “We can’t wait,” Marian adds. “Well done, Georgie and Jason, for such a great time out. We’ll be back.”
With this direction in Greek cookery, Georgie Smedley is not only sharing her culinary talents but also creating a space where people can connect, learn and have fun. Whether you’re looking to enhance your cooking skills or simply enjoy a unique culinary experience by the sea, Georgie’s classes offer something truly special.
