Scratch Stars Social Media Star of the Year finalist 2024, Jessica White, shares her inspirational career journey: detailing her humble beginnings painting nails at university, to opening her own salon.
The Leeds-based nail artist & content creator works full-time creating content for her 200,000+ social media followers, tending to the nails of clients, working with her ‘dream brand’: OPI, and teaching accredited nail courses, now adding salon owner to her impressive career roster.
Her introduction into the nail industry was an untraditional one, taking up nail tekking as a part-time financial venture during university. “I managed to take on clients alongside my studies, tailoring my work hours to fit my university commitments,” Jessica shares.
She juggled her law degree alongside her increasing client list, but soon decided that her passion lay in nail artistry. She continues: “After graduating, I decided to work in nails full-time for a year, with the intention of continuing only if I remained happy. And here I am!”
Jessica has since opened her own salon: Blanc Studios in Leeds, a goal she had been dreaming of since qualifying as a nail tech at 18 years-old.
“I often planned how I’d like it, how I’d style it and what I’d call it some day,” she shares. “When I saw the property available, something felt right, and I knew I had to go for it. What felt like a distant dream suddenly became very realistic, turning into an ‘oh, okay, this is happening now’ situation!”
Renovating the salon was a work in progress, and Jessica faced some challenges, commenting: “From issues with the woodwork and damp, to unexpected holes and materials arriving damaged: you name it, I’ve dealt with it, but pushed on.”
She continues: “The entire process has been full of ups and downs. There have been incredible moments of sheer excitement and fun, but there have also been times of stress and anxiety. Along the way, I’ve learned so much; I never thought I’d be able to say I’ve sanded, filled and lifted floors, let alone used a drill!”
When commenting on her desired salon aesthetic, Jessica explains: “I had a very clear vision for the vibe I wanted in the salon. My goal was to create a tranquil, luxurious space with a Scandinavian wood aesthetic, featuring neutral and brown tones throughout. The décor truly sets the tone for any salon, and I hope the choices I’ve made reflect the classy, professional and relaxed vibe I aim to offer.”
“I’m so incredibly excited to have a space I can call my own after working so hard for it. I’m relieved that the renovations are complete, allowing me to enjoy the space, and I’m full of hope for the future, confident that the salon will thrive.”
When asked what’s to come for the nail pro, Jessica relays: “Expect to see more educational content, with additional courses available both online and in-person for beginners and experienced techs. Masterclasses will also be held at the salon. Hopefully, it will grow and flourish into an established business in Leeds.”
Her social media presence has also recently turned to YouTube, where she has been documenting her salon renovation process – offering a behind-the-scenes scoop of being a salon owner & nail tech.
Jessica offers advice to fellow industry professionals, who may aspire towards a career path similar to hers: “Don’t stop dreaming,” she smiles. “You truly can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Make a plan, take steps to achieve it, work super hard and watch it unfold before your eyes.”
