You Beauty founder, Rachel Dobson, shares her career story and how learning to delegate tasks has been critical to her success as a manager.
Over the past five years, Rachel’s business has rapidly expanded and she reflects on the biggest lesson she has learned: “I tried to do everything myself in the beginning, and I’ve learned that it’s not sustainable. Learning to trust my team and delegate has been a game-changer, not just for the business but for my own peace of mind.”
After losing her job due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Rachel took a ‘leap of faith’ to become self-employed, opening You Beauty in November 2020. “At first, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to stay in the beauty industry at all. I felt lost. But when the space that later became my salon became available, I knew it was the perfect fit,” she shares.
However, back-to-back lockdowns were challenging, as she details: “The uncertainty of that time was overwhelming, but looking back, that period of struggle was an essential part of my journey. Reopening in April 2021 was the start of something incredible.”
Rachel notes that since then, the salon has expanded quickly, welcoming six additional therapists. “We’ve doubled in size, and the journey has been nothing short of amazing,” she says. “I’m so proud of everything we’ve built together.”
Though, this expansion came with extra responsibilities and pressure. “We want our clients to feel special every time they visit us. From the atmosphere to the treatments themselves, everything is designed with their relaxation and wellbeing in mind,” Rachel comments. “Our goal is to create an experience that leaves clients feeling rejuvenated, confident and valued.”
This goal helped her realise the importance of delegation and not taking on every responsibility herself — an aspect that ensures the salon meets its high standards. “It allows you to not overlook the small things,” Rachel shares. “Whether it’s the client experience or the finishes in the space, those little details make a big difference. Invest in good products, surround yourself with the right people and trust your instincts.”
Looking ahead, Rachel is excited to announce a new venture: offering training for aspiring nail technicians. “Teaching has always been a passion of mine,” she explains. “After completing my degree and gaining more experience, I knew I wanted to give back to the industry by helping others develop their skills. With the salon’s growth, I’m thrilled to be able to finally make this vision a reality.”
