Thanh Vu, managing director of four Dream Nails salons, reveals how and why you should make the most of seasonal events in the calendar…
I thoroughly enjoy writing for Scratch as it gives me time to sit and reflect on Dream Nails as a business and helps carve out a clear methodology for future events.
Our calendar year is hyphenated with key events – two of which fall in the final quarter of the year, namely, Halloween and Christmas. It is tough to say exactly what is in store in light of COVID-19 restrictions for both Halloween and Christmas, but I suspect many office parties will be cancelled and there may be far less trick or treaters. However, that is not to say we are not planning our arty designs for those who wish to look the part.
Planning ahead
When we plan ahead for seasonal events, we try to incorporate the trends of the year together with the seasonal event nail designs. In the last two years, we have noticed that ombré nails have heavily dominated the nail scene. We are expecting red/silver/gold glitter ombré to be our best seller this coming Christmas. They add the festive touch at the same time as being suitable to wear for the whole of December. They look very elegant while also adding the element of fun that Christmas brings.
Halloween
Halloween has certainly become more popular and we have embraced this ‘spooky’ holiday year by year. As it’s only celebrated on one weekend as oppose to the run-up that Christmas sees, we try to promote as early as possible. Uploading Halloween designs well in advance of the holiday always gives clients food for thought and invariably helps generate interest.
We are expecting and certainly pushing one Halloween fun accent nail. We think this makes sense given it is a one weekend holiday – once Halloween has passed, clients can simply pay for one nail to be re-done rather than an entire new set. Given the economic environment and clients watching every penny we feel this gives them the best of both worlds – ability to participate in Halloween nails at an additional cost of just one nail per hand.
Christmas
We tend to find hat a lot of clients have stepped away from Snowman/Father Christmas designs. Unfortunately, we expect this trend to continue given cancelled Christmas parties and fewer Christmas jumper days in the office. It is a shame, as our nail technicians love to be given free reign. However, we do get a few clients that love Christmas and insist on going the whole way. Perhaps one fun accent nail will prove more popular. It is eye-catching but minimal and we can easily re-do one nail for a normal set once the function has passed.
Other seasonal nails like Easter and summer holiday tend to follow the same theme every year. At Easter, a lot of pastel nails are requested with the occasional Easter bunny. The most popular holiday nails have recently been neon. Incorporating neon with ombré has proven extremely popular.
