Hair & beauty business coach, Maddi Cook of Boss Your Salon, shares advice to remove those negative thoughts as a nail pro…
Entrepreneurship isn’t for the faint- hearted. It takes a rock-solid mindset and the ability to navigate challenges and obstacles. Many nail bosses struggle to achieve their goals due to limiting beliefs that prevent them from taking risks and pursuing their goals.
These pesky beliefs are often deeply ingrained, and may feel beyond your control. Here, I explore the importance of challenging your limiting beliefs and share strategies that can help you when you’re feeling stuck.
What are limiting beliefs?
Limiting beliefs are negative thoughts and assumptions that we hold about ourselves and the world around us. They can be formed through past experiences or handed down from caregivers and societal norms. These beliefs can restrict your potential; not what you want as a business owner!
Common limiting beliefs among nail entrepreneurs include:
• ‘I am not experienced enough to charge what I’d like.’
• ‘The nail industry is saturated and highly competitive.’ • ‘I’m no good at the business side of things.’
• ‘I struggle with technology and numbers.’
Why are limiting beliefs harmful in business?
They can lead to self-doubt, fear of failure and a lack of confidence in your abilities, which can prevent you from taking risks and exploring opportunities. By challenging your limiting beliefs, you’ll be more likely to reach your potential and grow the business you deserve.
How to challenge your limiting beliefs:
1. Identify them
Reflect on thoughts and assumptions about yourself and your business. Write down any beliefs that you think may be holding you back. This can help you gain a better understanding of your thought patterns and identify areas to work on.
2. Question your beliefs
I like to refer to this as ‘calling myself out on my own BS’. Challenge the validity of your beliefs and consider whether they are based on facts or assumptions. This can help you gain a more objective perspective and identify where you may be limiting yourself unnecessarily. Write down any hard facts that oppose or challenge your limiting beliefs.
3. Reframe your beliefs
Once you have questioned your limiting beliefs, reframe them in a positive and empowering way. Instead of focusing on what you can’t do, focus on what you can do. For example, instead of saying “I don’t have enough experience,” reframe it to “I am constantly learning and growing.” This can help you shift your mindset and focus on your strengths, rather than limitations.
4. Take action
Use your new beliefs to guide your decisions and actions. When you catch yourself thinking of limiting beliefs, question and reframe them, and celebrate your successes along the way. This can help you build confidence and momentum as you work towards your goals.
5. Seek support
Talk to other nail bosses or a business
coach about strategies for overcoming your limiting beliefs. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, and who can offer encouragement and support. This can help you stay motivated and focused on your goals.
Often, the only thing holding you back is your own beliefs. By challenging your own BS, you can unlock your full potential and achieve success as an entrepreneur.
