As an employer, hiring and keeping the right staff for your business will undoubtedly be your biggest ongoing challenge. In terms of hiring, you will need to be thorough in your employment process; clear on what your business requires and can afford, and ensure your staff understands and is happy with all aspects of their employment.

You must always effectively judge that you have sufficient work or business to warrant a new recruit. It may be that you are replacing a member of staff who has left or that your business has grown sufficiently to employ an extra team member. Before you recruit externally, you could assess whether another member of staff could absorb the extra work, or whether there is an internal recruit that could fill the position. Perhaps let the existing team know of any vacancies within the salon to enable them to apply personally if they so wish.

“What you include in the advert is really important as it has to be interesting – a good tip os to read it back and think, ‘Is this the type of company I would like to work for?'” – Jade Evangelou, owner of Scratch Stars Nail Environment of the Year 2018, Jade Angel.

Once you have exhausted all internal options, place advertisements in beauty industry magazines, websites and in local newspapers, as well as on your social media platforms. “I am always open to employing more team members but am more vocal about it when I need to fill a chair,” says Tammy Koslowski, owner of NAF! Salon. “I have used job sites but they can charge a fee, so I prefer to post on social media. This type of post is more organic and ensures that people know about NAF! or can research the salon before they apply.” As well as this, try reaching out to local institutions to help find the right applicant, ensuring there is no stone left unturned. Tracy McGoogan, INK London educator, explains: “When recruiting, I advertise on our own social media feed and, depending on the role available, also get in touch with local colleges and training academies.”

A simple recruitment advert should include your company logo, description of the job/s available, some information on your minimum requirements, job location, a contact name and number. The advertisement should be relatively short and snappy while giving an impression of the nature of the salon and working environment. “What you include in the advert is really important as it has to be interesting – a good tip is to read it back and think, ‘Is this the type of company I would like to work for?'” says Jade Evangelou, owner of Scratch Stars Nail Environment of the Year 2018, Jade Angel. “Required qualifications and experience level, perks of the position, employed or self-employed, pay level, full or part time are all things that can be included.”
