Discoloured Corroded Nail Tools

Maintaining high-quality nail tools is essential for delivering safe and professional nail services to clients. However, have you ever wondered why some of your nail tools – particularly metal ones – develop discolouration, tarnish and corrosion?

Understanding the factors that contribute to these issues can help you prolong the lifespan of your tools and deliver consistently high-quality services to clients.

One of the primary reasons for discolouration and corrosion of nail tools is exposure to moisture. When metal tools come into contact with water or moisture from sanitation, disinfection and sterilisation solutions, it can lead to the formation of rust and discolouration.

The discolouration of metal items such as E-file bits and nail tools is due to chemical reaction, oxidation, which can occur when metal is exposed to air and moisture for an extended period. Metal reacts with sulphur in the air, which starts to form a dark layer over it. Oxidation can lead to the gradual erosion of coloured coatings and the exterior of metal.

To help mitigate this issue, I recommend diligently following manufacturers’ guidelines for disinfection of tools.

Ensure that you do not leave metal tools in disinfection solution for longer than the recommended time and always thoroughly dry them after cleaning, using a low heat hairdryer or microfibre cloth. Concentrate on crevices, hinges and knurling, and store tools in a dry, moisture-free environment.

Another cause of discolouration or tarnish is a chemical reaction. Chemicals commonly used in nail services, such as acetone and other solvents, can react with the metal surfaces of tools, leading to discolouration and corrosion. To prevent this, it’s crucial to clean tools regularly with solutions designed for this task and to avoid prolonged exposure to untested solutions.

Routine maintenance is key to preserving the quality of nail tools.

Neglecting to clean, sanitise and properly store your tools can accelerate their deterioration. Implementing a regular maintenance schedule, including cleaning, disinfecting and oiling tools, can help prevent discolouration and corrosion. Think of jewellery like silver. When this has substances such as creams left on it, tarnish and discolouration occur.

Environmental factors such as exposure to air, temperature fluctuations and airborne pollutants can also contribute to the degradation of nail tools. Storing tools in a cool, dry place and minimising exposure to environmental contaminants can help preserve their integrity.

Can discolouration and tarnish be removed?

You may be able to remove this by soaking tools in a mild detergent (washing up liquid works well) and hot water for a long period, followed by a gentle scrub with a soft brush – but there is no guarantee. Make sure to rinse any solutions off and dry tools thoroughly to prevent oxidation from oxygen and water.

In conclusion, understanding why nail tools discolour and corrode is crucial for maintaining their longevity and quality. By implementing proper maintenance practices and minimising exposure to moisture and solvents, you can ensure that your nail tools remain in excellent condition, enabling you to deliver exceptional nail services to clients.
