Liza Smith, session nailist & co-owner of award-winning Bodylines salon in Sittingbourne, Kent, reveals the steps she’s taking to manage the safety of her staff and clients while honouring appointments…

“The government has given the advice to avoid social outlets, which could have a huge impact on nail and beauty businesses. Here’s what I’m doing to manage the effects:

  • I have split my team into shifts, with one or two working at any one time. We have a large salon over three floors, and will make sure there is only one client in any one place at any one time.
  • We are allowing 15 minutes between clients to clean the area.
  • We are calling clients in advance to see if they would rather be in on a very quiet day to be more isolated.
  • I have issued the team with reduced hours letters. I have said that if we manage to keep the clients coming in until end of March, their March wage will be as normal, even if they have worked fewer hours. April will depend on the next 10 days.
  • Peninsular (an HR and health & safety support company for small businesses) is writing up a risk assessment on the new working practices, which I will run by my insurers.
  • We have discussed the team working on a mobile basis if we are forced to close.
  • We are calling our clients to see if they would like a home visit if it comes to that.

“Even if our businesses change beyond recognition, we will still bounce back.”
