Do you and your team members need a morale boost? Scratch gathers expert tips to support positivity in the workspace…
1. Lead by example

“Salon owners can establish a cohesive team by leading by example,” advises Lisa Stone, educator at professional beauty brand, Salon System. “You cannot expect your team to be happy and motivated if you are negative. Show that there is reason to be positive in the workspace, and look to the future by sharing ideas and plans with your team.”
Employees like to know what’s going on in the business, so regular team meetings can promote a sense of inclusion. Encouraging staff to share their successes in these will motivate fellow colleagues.

“We believe that communication is key and hold regular appraisals and meetings that help our stylists achieve their goals,” share Joanna MacDonald and Jennifer Linton, co-directors of Aberdeen hair salon, Linton & Mac. “We also hold a ‘team buzz’ meeting every Friday morning before the salon opens. This is hosted as an extended staff meeting on the first Friday of each month, where a member of the team passes on some knowledge.”
2. Be considerate
“For the ultimate boost in staff morale, treat your team how you’d like to be treated,” comments Hannah Potter, founder of business creation and growth specialist provider, Clinic Creators. “If you wouldn’t like something, the chances are that your team wouldn’t either. Considering that people spend more time at work than they do with their family and friends, work should feel positive, rewarding and balanced.”
3. Treat one another

Allow your team to book appointments with each other for no charge during downtime. This not only helps boost moods, but can serve up opportunities to evaluate treatments and improve them. “My team members and I offer treatments to each other during quiet times. We spend the majority of our time making others look gorgeous, so love getting together to make each other feel special,” comments Charli Jepson, head of education at nail brand, Glitterbels.
Also treat staff by celebrating milestones: both business-related and personal. By recognising that these matter, employees will feel valued.

4. Promote productivity
“There are always so many tasks to attend to in the salon, so have a list ready at the start of the day for your team to complete,” advises Liz McKeon, salon business expert. “This way, even if your floor isn’t full with clients, the team is focused and productive, which will boost morale. It also helps the floor feel vibrant and attractive to clients.”
5. Offer rewards
Rewarding team members for good work is not only a great incentive, but helps to increase staff loyalty. “An effective way to reward accomplishments is through praise,” says Lisa Stone. “Everyone loves to hear that they are doing a good job – and it’s at no cost to your business.
“Set goals and if these are hit, reward with invectives such as bonuses, gift vouchers or a team activity. You could even pay for employees to do a training course they have expressed an interest in.”
