Anna Khanna, founder of Socialista Media, reveals ways nail techs can improve social media content…

If we’ve learned anything from the last six months, it’s how technology can be – and has been – one of our biggest assets; in particular, social media.

Since March, the beauty industry has been one of the biggest effected industries on the globe, with nearly 40% of businesses closing in the UK alone. Now, using all the tools you have at your fingertips is extremely important.

As a nail tech, Instagram is one of your biggest assets in terms of showcasing your hard work. A picture speaks 1000 words – so make it count! Content is KEY on your Instagram right now, so you should be looking to create engaging imagery, consistent messaging & potential client interaction. Here’s a few pointers to help do this:

1 – Pick a good caption.

Whether it’s a one liner or a full blown essay – make it interesting. People have a short attention span these days & with so many competitors in the industry, you need something to make your post stand out. Whether it’s a celebrity reference, a cheeky one liner or something with meaning – make it count.

Consistency is also super important in terms of picking a layout of your caption, so make sure each grid post flows.

2 – Hashtag Hashtag Hashtag!

Hashtags are one of THE best tools you can utilise as a nail tech. They are free, the reach is phenomenal and you can use up to 30! Hashtags create a story and more importantly, you can track them. By searching a hashtag you can see just how many people have used it & the posts that relate. For example, some of the most popular hashtags include – #nails, #nailsonfleek # nailsoftheday #nailsofinstagram – all having millions of views & followings. Alternatively, you can create your own! This will give you a trackable entity so you can see just how much of an effect they’re having on your account and how many people are engaging with you.

3 – Stories are KEY!

These days, stories are overtaking the popularity of grid posts. They are quick & simple to access being at the top of your app, have incredible features within them and are GREAT for encouraging engagement from your audience in general. For example, a great way to use a story as a nail tech would be posting a ‘this or that’ type story – asking your audience to choose between two separate looks for example. Or requesting an answer to a question. “What look would you like me to create next week?”

4 – Reply to EVERY comment

It may seem a simple thing to do, but the effect on your accounts visibility by just replying and liking each comment is so important. By liking & replying to each comment underneath your posts show not only that you are interested in your customer & audience, but shows Instagram that your account is busy and should be bumped up the visibility queue! Even if this is just an emoji or a ‘Thank you’ – comments like these work wonders!

5 – Engage Engage Engage!

Naturally, the Instagram algorithm favours posts with high engagement. But what does this mean? This means the interaction between your account and your followers. A great way to do this is utilising the tools Instagram gives you such as like, share, comment but also story polls or asking questions of your followers encouraging them to answer.

If above has highlighted anything, it is just how important Instagram Stories are for engagement, content creation and visibility of your brand. Below, are a few extra tips for increasing your Instagram story views in particular.

  • Don’t post on your story for over 24 hours:

Something not everyone knows – but this resets the Instagram algorithm. Therefore, having a short break actually increases our story views. This is extremely important in terms of getting your nails noticed! A lot of people think the more you post, the more views you’ll get – this proves that this in fact is not the case! Give it a go & see the results for yourself.

  • Caption your stories:

These days, a lot of people choose to watch stories with the sound off. This means when the people in the video are speaking this could lead to the audio content being ignored & inevitably the slide skipped. Captioning the slides are vitally important to help with engagement & making sure your audience receives the right information. This is also important for the portion of your audience who are deaf. Lorna Luxe (influencer) does this on a daily basis which is a clear cut example of how successful this is.

  • Posting a selfie in the first two stories can actually help!

Finally, believe it or not your audience loves a selfie – even if you are a nail tech! This maybe out of your comfort zone, however research shows people always tap to see more if they are selfie focused!

It can be a bit unformattable at times – but give it a go & monitor the results – it really does make a difference!
